New Torrent Guide Find Torrent Client For You

By

One of the first things a new torrent user needs to do is select a torrent client. The torrent client is the program that is going to search for users with the file you want, and establish a remote connection between that user and you.  This will allow you to download the file directly from them, or any other “peer” that has part of that file. This method of two computers establishing a remote connection and avoiding the need for a server between them to store the information is known as peer to peer file transfer; or more commonly p2p.

Establishing Remote Connection

I recommend most new torrent users go with the popular uTorrent client: http://www.utorrent.com/downloads . This is the torrent client I’ve used for years. Some of the reasons for it being one of the top torrent clients over the past years are detailed below.

uTorrent requires very little resources to run.

  • Unlike most torrent clients, uTorrent has many useful features and option settings yet needs very little CPU and computer memory to run. This enables you to run uTorrent at all hours, without using more than 7 or so MB of memory.

You can set download priority from 0 or “Don’t Download” to low, medium, or high priority.

  • This not only allows you to decide how much bandwidth (or download/upload speed) to allot to each torrent separately, but enables you to tweak and update large downloads that consist of multiple folders, rars, or numerous files.
  • For example, set the first episode of a large torrent series to high priority, while the later video files "parts" can be set to 0 or low. This means you will finish the first episode as soon as possible, and be able to watch that while the others finish downloading. Being able to update the files you want to download, rather than having to stop and re-start a torrent consisting of files multiple GB large, allows you to skip the "hash check" (check for what files you have already downloaded to your hard drive). Skipping this hash check can save 15 minutes or more of your hardrive working and you waiting.

uTorrent is constantly updated and improved.

  • The final, and most important reason I have stuck with uTorrent rather than switching to another popular client, or any of the new torrent clients, is due to the constant updating and improving of the uTorrent client. uTorrent updates about once a month, and has released multiple updates in a single month on numerous occasions. This enables uTorrent to stay up to date with the changing torrent scene, and to support new or updated OS and computer hardware.

Other popular torrent client choices, all of which are top notch are:

Azureus - http://azureus.sourceforge.net/

BitLord - http://www.bitlord.com/

BitTornado - http://www.bittornado.com/

As you can see you have a few great options to choose from when looking for a new torrent client. I encourage you to try a couple to see which you enjoy. However I have to warn you to avoid “Nova Torrent” “Bitcomet” and “TorrentStorm” if you are experimenting to find a new torrent client. These are either bug ridden, unstable, or just plain dangerous. There may be other quality or terrible trackers I failed to mention, or new torrent clients I just haven’t heard about, so please contact me with anything that should be added.

I will be adding advanced guides on ways to to customize and optimize the uTorrent client specifically very soon. Many settings are supported in all of the popular clients, so the guide should help you no matter which client you decide to stick with. If you have a question before these guides get added please hop over to my Torrent World blog or leave a message here and I will get you squared away.

If this guide was helpful to you, or you have any questions that I have not covered in any of my guides yet, please hop over to my Torrent World Blog blog to see my other guides and get into contact with me.
